The challenge
A name that had outgrown the business
Dave Walker has looked after Cumbrian homes since 2000. Plumbing one week, a bathroom the next, then plastering, joinery, fencing, or repointing the stonework on a house older than anyone living in it. Work arrived the way it always had, through people who already knew him.
That model has a ceiling. Recommendations only travel as far as the last customer's address book, and anyone who had not already heard of him had no way to find him. For a one-man business covering a county the size of Cumbria, that is a lot of work never reaching the door.
So this did not start with a website. It started with the name. The business traded as Eden Property and Garden Services, which had two problems. It was a mouthful, and it was advertising garden services he had stopped offering - so the name was actively bringing in the one kind of enquiry he had to turn down.
The awkward part was the range. Somebody searching for a plumber in Keswick and somebody searching for hot lime pointing are two completely different people with two completely different jobs. One homepage cannot be the right answer to both.
The solution
Fix the name, then build for it
A shorter name and a new mark first, then thirty-five pages built around the two questions customers actually ask - what do you do, and do you come out to me.
Shorter, and true again
Eden Property and Garden Services became Eden Homeworks. Eden stays, because 25 years of recognition sit in that word. Homeworks covers every trade he does without listing any of them, and nothing in it promises work he no longer takes.
A mark that works on a van
A simple, high-contrast mark designed to stay legible at the sizes that actually matter to a tradesman - a van door, an invoice, and a phone screen held at arm's length.
Twelve trades, twelve pages
Plumbing, bathrooms, kitchens, plastering, tiling, joinery, painting, fencing and decking, sheds, hot lime pointing and general maintenance - each written for the person searching for that one thing.
Eight areas, named properly
Penrith, Carlisle, Appleby-in-Westmorland, Kendal, Keswick, Windermere, Tebay, and Ullswater and the Eden Valley - each with its own page, so a local search finds a local answer rather than a list of towns in a footer.
The specialism, given room
Hot lime pointing is the sort of thing owners of old stone houses search for by name and almost nobody writes about. It gets a full page and a supporting article rather than a line on a list.
Reasons to trust a stranger
A gallery of finished work, real reviews, and plain answers to the questions people are too polite to ask - fully insured, free quotes, no obligation, one tradesman from start to finish.
Contact the way trades actually work
Phone and WhatsApp in the header on every page, alongside a quote form. Somebody with a leak wants to press call, not fill in a form.
Search, done properly
Every page optimised for the search it is meant to answer, with HomeAndConstructionBusiness and Service markup so search engines understand what he does and where he does it.
On the map, literally
We set up and filled in the Google Business Profile, which for a local trade is often worth more than anything the website itself does.
An email address that matches
Business email set up on the new domain, so quotes arrive from the business rather than from a free account with a number on the end.
The outcome
Findable for the work he wants
The site launched recently, so there is no year of ranking data to point at yet. What there is, is a business that can now be found by people who have never met him.
Ninety-six combinations covered
Twelve services across eight areas. Whichever way somebody phrases it, there is a page on the site that answers that exact question.
A niche nobody else claims
Hot lime pointing brings in exactly the sort of considered, higher-value work on period stone properties that a general handyman listing never would.
Fewer wasted conversations
Because each page says plainly what the job involves and where he travels, callers arrive already knowing the answer to both - which saves the enquiries that were never going to go anywhere.
The recommendation now lands somewhere
Word of mouth still does the heavy lifting. The difference is that when somebody passes his name on, there is now a site that backs it up with finished work and reviews.
